Hi Joe, the manual that came with the loader safety latch for my JD 410 loader says it is for the 410 loader on the 4100. I have seen at least one other post where a dealer told the customer that his 410 loader did not need the safety latch because it only applied to certain serial numbers. I don't know if that is true and I suggest you check with your dealer to be certain. Even though I received the safety latch I have never had a problem with the 410 loader and I have used it for some very heavy lifting.

I have two issues with JD customer service. My 4100 developed problems with all three injectors. Issue #1, terrible dealer service: My dealer gave me the "bum's rush" for 6 months and then agreed to pick up my tractor for repairs only after I stormed the service desk during a heavy sales period. After 2 weeks of letting my tractor sit in the rain in the dealer's parking lot they finally looked at it and agreed that it needed new injectors. Issue #2: The dealer informed me that JD would not replace the injectors but they would rebuild them. I don't want rebuilt defective parts on my machine, I want factory spec. new parts!!!!!!!!!!! The result is that the 4100 still does not run right and my next compact utility tractor will be blue or orange. To summarize, you got me once but you will never get me again.

I have a 58" tiller that I bought from TSC. It works great on the 4100. It weighs about 450 lbs. The 4100 never even labors when I bury the tiller. For the money I would have gone with the 790 if it had a hydro trans.

Hi Kelly, I'm not certain what a 332 is but I suspect it is a lot like a 318 with a diesel engine. I used to have a 318 with the tiller and front blade. It was a great tractor. Never had any problems with it. I had the 50" deck and it took about 1.5 hours to mow 1.25 acres. I also tilled two gardens. One is 60 X 40 and the other is 30 X 25. It did a great job tilling. I found a link to a place with some prices for the components that you are thinking about buying. The reason I sold my 318 was to upgrade to a 4100.

I have a JD4100 that had injector problems. One of the first questions my dealer asked me is "are you sure you have been running it wide open?" Wide open is in the neighborhood of 2750 rpm on the the JD4100. Wide open is the setting to use for mowing grass and almost wide open is the setting to use with 540 rpm 3 pt. hitch attachments. The dealer said that anything much less than full throttle does not generate enough heat in the smaller diesel engines to keep the injectors clean. I don't know if any of this is true but it is what my dealer told me.

dsg,In anwser to your question, yes and no. I do not know of a DOG tractor made by JD. But they did make a DOG ride on mower, namely the SX85. I am about to take a $1000 loss on that deal. Other than that financial mistake, I have been very pleased with the 4100 and LT155. I have not been pleased with the dealer. Regardless of what color you choose, the dealer is probably the most important part of the equation.

Thanks for all the ideas. I decided to go the way of mbjacobs. I did not have the proper tools to drill a hole in the bucket of the size required so installing on the draw bar worked out well. I did mount two chain hooks on the bucket and even painted them JD green. Now that I can see the ball and the trailer, hookup is a breeze. Besides I like the idea of throwing a chain over the ball to drag stuff.

Greg, the latch retainer update does refer to the 870 but only with the 420 and 430 loaders. There is no mention of the 870 with the 440 loader. In fact there is no mention of the 440 loader throughout the manual so I think you are safe. I have a 410 loader on the 4100 so I installed the retainer. It does detract from the ease of use and I may remove it since I have never had a problem. Besides I am not very impressed with the design. It is loose and clunky and the spacer shape is a never ending source of wonder. It does provide the proper spacing but it is an inverted "L" shape that appears to have no function aside from providing the proper spacing. It constantly bangs against the paint job. Why didn't JD just provide an ordinary washer that provided the proper spacing instead of the weird looking "L" shaped piece of metal that is the proper thickness? If anyone has an answer I would sure like to hear it.

I don't have a clue what the 3 pt. lift capacity of a Ford 8N is but I do remember a previous discussion on this board where it was generally agreed that 3 pt. lift capacity was the amount of weight that could be lifted 24 inches beyond the lift arms. I suppose that this rating is based on the belief that most cat. I implements have a center of gravity approximately 24 inches behind the lift arms. My JD 4100 has a 3 pt. lift capacity of about 960 lbs. I would guess that the Ford 8N has a similar rating. Hope this helps.

The manual that I got with my Befco tiller gives a straight forward method for cutting the drive shaft to the right length. Basically you want it to be 2" shorter than the shortest collapased length. If you want I can scan the manual and email it to you. Cutting the drive shaft was not easy for me. It was made of hardened steel.

It makes sense to me. My JD4100 manual says to change the primary air filter as needed per air filter air restriction indicator. It has a pop up device when the air filter is plugged. Or every 500 hours of operation, more often in extremely dirty conditions. The secondary filter is to be replaced after every third primary air filter. I think air filters are one of those things that need replacing when they get too plugged to allow proper air flow or they get so old that the paper element may start to fall apart due to exposure to the elements. This is not an expert opinion by any means.

Thanks Jonathon. With your help I was able to locate a web site for the Tong Yang tractors. As you said, they look the part but I am curious if anyone has any experience with these tractors. They certainly made a good choice for engines.

A friend of mine had the worst luck with hydroseeding. He had just built a new house and had the lawn hydroseeded. It was during the year of the worst drought that I can recall. The only rain that hit all summer was centered over his house and was intense just after the hydroseeding. The hydroseed company came back and fixed the problem at no additional cost. During the drought it required a lot of watering but the end result was great. This all happened about 10 years ago and I am sure things have improved since then.

I recently purchased a JD LT155. It is just a small lawn mower and it has a hydro transmission. I can not find anything in the manual that tells when or how to change the fluid in the transmission. I wonder if this is an oversite or if the hydro fluid is not supposed to be changed??? Does anyone have any ideas??

One of the fellows at the hunting camp wants to buy a seedling tree planter that works from a 3 pt. hitch and pto. We are not talking about a quality long term use piece of equipment. We are looking for functional and cheep. We are located in Michigan. Any offers out there?

Following the directions in the manual has always worked for me and I don't know of any shortcuts. Once the deck is level it is a done deal and should not need anymore attention.

Hi Danny, that sounds like an adjustment problem to me. I suggest you give your dealer a call. The dealer may be able to fix it on location or you may have to part with your new machine for a few days. In any event, you should have it fixed while it is still under warranty and before someone gets hurt.

There was nothing about serial numbers on the letter I received. In fact the letter is titled "Safety Recall for Owners of 410, 420, 430 or 460 Loaders". The letter also states "A potential safety problem on John Deere 400 Series Loaders has been identified. The loader could unexpectedly disengage from the tractor and possibly result in injury to either the operator or to a bystander". Maybe the problem is limited to certain serial numbers but that is not what the letter says.
